Top 30 Final Fantasy Villains - #16

#16 - Professor Hojo
(Final Fantasy VII)

Hey, it’s another Final Fantasy VII villain! Unlike Rufus and the Turks, however, he is completely devoid of charisma. He has no style. He has nothing redeeming about his personality whatsoever. He is one of the most vile, disgusting, downright EVIL human beings ever to grace this series.

Professor Hojo was the lead scientist of Shinra, and let me tell you, he LOVED his job. But he also believed ethics had no place in science. This went so far as to inject alien cells into his pregnant wife’s unborn son for the intent to create a super soldier, the end result of which was… well, you may see it on this list at some point. Despite his retirement early in the game, he continues to be a key player in Shinra’s activities.

I wish I could go into more detail about his backstory, but there really isn’t much to be found. He has no real excuse for any of the amoral things he does. Why did he inject his pregnant wife with alien bits? SCIENCE! Why did he attempt to breed a human (or at least humanoid) being with a talking dog thing? SCIENCE! Why did he turn humans into monstrous abominations? SCIENCE!
Overall, he’s just a callous, disgusting human being. He consistently refers to Aerith and her mother as if they’re animals (since they technically aren’t human), seems to have a perverted streak if his beach groupies are any indication, and when the game’s main character, Cloud, believes he’s a clone, Hojo knows full well it isn’t true but plays along anyway just to screw with him. The closest thing he has to a moment of compassion is when he decides to devote his resources to helping his son destroy the planet. That’s still pretty twisted, but… at least he’s supportive of his kid’s hobby?

I don’t have much to say about him compared to some other villains on this list, but he is nonetheless an incredibly memorable villain. With his shocking lack of morality and his role in the backstory, he certainly makes his mark.
