Top 30 Final Fantasy Villains - #13

#13 - Gilgamesh
(Final Fantasy V)
Say hello to the Final Fantasy equivalent of Deadpool. Gilgamesh was introduced in Final Fantasy V, but has become a fan favorite character and returned for multiple outings since.

In Final Fantasy V, Gilgamesh is simply the powerful, egotistical, humorously incompetent lieutenant to Exdeath. He fights against the main heroes several times, and despite being actually quite powerful, fails over and over again. Eventually, Exdeath gets sick of him and casts him into the Interdimensional Rift, where he winds up sacrificing himself to save the heroes, who he has begun to respect.

But that’s not the end of the story for him! Turns out that after that, he disappeared into the Void and started jumping through different universes and appearing throughout the various Final Fantasy games, traveling between worlds and searching for legendary swords but usually only getting cheap replicas, such as the legendary Excalipoor.

First and foremost, the guy is HILARIOUS. Every other line out of his mouth is hammy and self-aware, and his grand entrances have a tendency to backfire. For example, in Final Fantasy XII, he attempts to make a dramatic leap onto the bridge the party is crossing… only to completely miss and careen over the other side, before leaping back up.

Don’t misunderstand, however; Gilgamesh is more than capable of holding his own in battle. The fights against him in his home game are all fun and intense, helped by his fun, witty dialogue and his epic theme song, Battle on the Big Bridge. In other games he has appeared as both ally and enemy, from being a hidden summon in Final Fantasy VIII to a fearsome duelist in XIV. He even had a cameo in the remakes of Final Fantasy 1, that’s how iconic he is to the series.

Again, I have very little else to say about him. He’s an all-around fun character whose appearance is always something to look forward to.
